One of the most common concerns of parents is the alignment of their child’s legs when viewed from the front.
Genu valgum, or what is commonly known as X-knees, is an alteration in the angle of the legs when viewed from the front, in which the knees are drawn together and the ankles are separated.
All children go through a physiological genu valgum phase (totally normal) from the age of 2 years, and between 3 and 5 years in an accentuated manner, and up to the age of 7 years, which is when normal alignment is acquired.
Genu valgus will generally occur bilaterally, although it is possible for it to appear unilaterally, and special attention and follow-up should be paid to these cases.
