What are Achilles tendon injuries?

Tendinopathies are pathologies related to the Achilles tendon itself that affect many runners but also many people with an active life.

It is an injury caused by the continuous overload of the Achilles tendon that sometimes causes loss of mobility, functional impotence and inability to practice normal physical activity.

The difference between tendinitis and Achilles tendinosis is that in the latter there is an important deterioration of the collagen fibers and a degeneration of these but no inflammation, therefore there is a chronic injury. It is therefore very important to determine the current status of the lesion to proceed accordingly, this can be easily determined with an ultrasound in the same consultation, not only that, the ultrasound will allow us to effectively assess the evolution of the case.

What are the symptoms of Achilles tendinopathy?

Most Achilles tendon symptoms are symptoms that start with very little pain and then worsen over time.

The most painful moment occurs after a period of inactivity, for example after sleeping and getting out of bed in the morning, but after the first few steps and a slight limp, the pain gradually disappears and is reactivated after resting at the end of the race.

In the case of runners, the pain appears at the beginning of the races and disappears as they continue running.

The pain occurs in the Achilles tendon above the heel because there is a rupture of fibers as explained above is a very painful picture.

TREATMENT WITH ULTRASOUND-GUIDED SURGERY OF ACHILLES TENDINOPATHY IN MALAGA

If you suffer from Achilles Tendinopathy and are looking for an effective solution to your persistent pain at the Malagueta Foot Clinic our expert podiatric surgeons Dr. Hidalgo and Dr. Ruben Montes offer you a cutting-edge option for the treatment of Achilles Tendinopathy: ultrasound-guided surgery.

Our team of highly qualified and experienced doctors have implemented ultrasound surgery in Malaga as an innovative and accurate alternative to effectively address this condition.

I also want to talk about conservative treatments for Achilles tendinopathy based on physiotherapy or rehabilitation, eccentric work, readaptation… that help us a lot, in fact it is very important for us the multidisciplinary work in this pathology to achieve the best results.

In Clínica del Pie la Malagueta we try to find, with advanced therapies, a solution that is oriented towards a regenerative objective of the tissues or collagen fibers that are damaged looking for the true cause that has caused the injury.

In our study of the footprint or advanced biomechanics, in Clínica del pie La Malagueta, we really look for the origin of the injury in muscular imbalances, structural alterations, training overloads, lack of adaptation to training, altered walking patterns ….. to correct it and once detected, our patients can be treated Achilles tendon with physiotherapy, shock waves, infiltrations of platelet-rich plasma, insoles to 3D measures, etc. ….

It is when there is persistence of symptoms after a few months of conservative treatment that there is no choice but to resort to surgery.

The surgery combines high-resolution ultrasound with advanced surgical techniques, allowing real-time visualization of the affected structures in the foot. This means that our specialists can precisely identify the damaged area and perform the procedure with greater accuracy, minimizing the risk of damaging surrounding healthy tissues.

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and with the continuous guidance of a high resolution ultrasound scanner, two 2mm incisions are made with an almost imperceptible needle which, for the patient, is like an infiltration but lasts approximately 1 hour where either a lengthening of the calf muscles or a partial or total resection of the plantaris muscle is performed.

How is the recovery from ultrasound surgery for Achilles Tendinopathy in Malaga?

The patient can immediately after surgery can perform active dorsal and plantar flexion of the ankle.

Patients walk with the aid of crutches and an orthosis (walker or “Walker”), with partial support, from the first postoperative day. Full support is authorized between the third or seventh day, depending on discomfort. The orthosis is removed after 2-4 weeks and the patient wears a normal shoe and can begin physical therapy and sports activity.
