Podiatry for children
Genu varum, cowboy knees or bracketed legs, is an alteration of the angle formed by the legs when viewed from the front, in which the distance between the knees is increased and the distance between the ankles is decreased.
It is an alteration equal to genu valgum, but with the opposite sign, i.e., the forces go outward instead of inward as in valgus.
All children present a physiological varus stage from birth to 2 years of age, and may present another, less accentuated, at 7 or 8 years of age, more frequently in girls before reaching normality. Outside of these age periods, genu varum should not be present.
To detect it, in addition to the physical appearance that can be so evident, it is necessary to perform a physical examination of the child and assess the alignment of the leg.
A separation between the knees of up to 6 centimeters can be considered normal, more than that would be pathological. It is usually bilateral and may present symptoms such as pain in the external area of the knees, in the leg musculature, frequent stumbling, rubbing between the ankles…
As soon as symptomatology appears, treatment must be instituted.
